The manufacturer recommends washing them with lemon Pine-sol and waiting a month for the smell to diminish. It would be great if they performed this process at the factory! The smell has been making me sick but is getting better after a week.
I am happy with the build quality and the center ring. The weights are easy to handle. My home gym has many places to hang weights and I need to order another set, consider the heavier set if you do not have staked plates in your home gym.
The weights ship in a wooden crate with each large plate inside of its own inner cardboard box.

Good weight set, nice price, bad smell, February 2, 2009 By Amazon Verified Purchase This review is from: Body Solid Rubber Grip Olympic Set (Sports) Nice set of weights that had the optimum plate variety for me at a good price. The rubber coating is very nice - keeps the plates from clanging around and makes them a bit easier to handle. I must say, however, that after unpacking them and putting them in my weight tree it took several days for the prominent smell (which I assume to be the rubber coating) to dissipate out of my basement - it was pretty unpleasant for a few days and hard to ignore -gave me a bit of a headache. You may consider unpacking these in the garage and letting them air out for a few days before bringing them in the house if that's an option for you. Other than that I'm very happy with them.
